I saw this headline in the LA Times "David Letterman apologizes to staff" and I couldn't help but think, "Why? Was she that ugly?"

In my experience my staff doesn't care that much if the target is ugly or not.

Mine either...it's more a feeling of gratitude. But Letterman's has probably developed some rather refined taste by now.

I'm not sure I get your point. So he had a long-term relationship with her. The way the others have been described, they were just fucking.

That is the way I understand it. Dave and Merrill go way back before Dave was famous. They dated then lived together. Merrill was working as a writer for Dave and is the creator of the "dumb pet tricks."
