In the past, I always thought Uganda was a backwater country with the likes of Idi Amin, but today it sounds no better.
By KATHARINE HOURELD and GODFREY OLUKYA, Associated Press Writers KAMPALA, Uganda – Proposed legislation would impose the death penalty for some gay Ugandans, and their family and friends could face up to seven years in jail if they fail to report them to authorities. Even landlords could be imprisoned for renting to homosexuals.
Gay rights activists say the bill, which has prompted growing international opposition, promotes hatred and could set back efforts to combat HIV/AIDS. They believe the bill is part of a continentwide backlash because Africa's gay community is becoming more vocal.

How can a whole nation be that backward and ignorant?

To be fair, it's probably not the whole nation (it certainly isn't the gays there) but the idiots in power. Reminds me of the neocons and the far right wing of the Republican Party back in the states. They're almost that crazy too.

At least the powers that be have the brains to ban this barbaric tradition of female circumcision or better worded female genital mutilation.
KAMPALA, Uganda – Uganda's parliament has approved a bill banning female genital mutilation.
Minister of Ethics and Integrity James Nsaba Buturo said that the new law, passed without opposition late Thursday, could give offenders a life sentence.
Female genital mutilation, also known as female circumcision, is prevalent in portions of West and East Africa to limit women's sexual activity. More than 3,000 girls are affected each December in northeastern Uganda.
The girl's clitoris and sometimes other genital parts are removed. Doctors say it eliminates any pleasure for women during sex and can lead to complications during childbirth.
Female genital mutilation is illegal in more than a dozen African countries, although laws are rarely enforced.

The African continent has such potential. Blessed with many natural resources, it is a shame the people cannot get it together.

While great progress seems to be made in USA and the world, I think things get more conservative as time goes by. What happened to free love of the 60's? That was over 40 years ago!
